I am an
ecosystem ecologist, interested in the flow of energy and the cycling of
nutrients through aquatic ecosystems. In my holistic approach to studying
aquatic ecosystems, I use integrative tools of ecosystem function to understand
how freshwater environments respond to natural and human-mediated changes, such
as the impact of management actions or seasonal shifts in the biotic community.
The research perspective I have maintained during my career has allowed me to bridge disciplines and approach aquatic ecology from creative and novel angles. For instance, in my post-doctoral research at Aarhus University, I used methods from microbiology, plant physiology, and biogeochemistry to investigate nutrient cycling dynamics in macrophyte-dominated streams. In the coming months, I will be quantifying the ecosystem services of stream restorations in the Great Lakes basin and integrating these data into a cost-benefit analysis to determine their ecological and economic value.
